About Us

Society for Aid to Children Inoperable in Mauritius (SACIM) was initially created in 1967 by Dr. Julia Maigrot, Paediatrician, Mrs. Patricia Rountree, Director of Mauritius Red Cross, Mr. Jomadar, Commissioner of Social Security. Prior to the creation of SACIM, Red Cross was often requested to help in sending children abroad suffering from surgical conditions inoperable in Mauritius for surgery.
750+

Since 1967 till date a total of 750+ children have been operated upon successfully abroad. As from 2020, following the amendment of SACIM constitution 27 children have successfully undergone surgeries in local private clinics which include both cardiac and non-cardiac cases.

950+

As at date, a total of 950+ cases have been recorded, comprising 570 cardiac cases, 74 neuro-surgical cases, and 316 cases falling under various other categories. These include cochlear implants, medial nerve repairs, dental implants, ophthalmic procedures, orthopaedics, facial paresis, and cleft palate surgeries.

Conditions For Surgery

SACIM provides surgery assistance to children of the Republic of Mauritius which includes Rodrigues and Agaléga, whose parents meet the established criteria. Children must be under the age of 18 years old and both parents’ income should not exceed Rs 100,000 per month. SACIM looks after cases which should be operated by specialised surgeons. A referral medical report from the treating doctor is mandatory.
