About Us
Society for Aid to Children Inoperable in Mauritius (SACIM) was initially created in 1967 by Dr. Julia Maigrot, Paediatrician, Mrs. Patricia Rountree, Director of Mauritius Red Cross, Mr. Jomadar, Commissioner of Social Security. Prior to the creation of SACIM, Red Cross was often requested to help in sending children abroad suffering from surgical conditions inoperable in Mauritius for surgery.
750+
Since 1967 till date a total of 750+ children have been operated upon successfully abroad. As from 2020, following the amendment of SACIM constitution 27 children have successfully undergone surgeries in local private clinics which include both cardiac and non-cardiac cases.
950+
As at date, a total of 950+ cases have been recorded, comprising 570 cardiac cases, 74 neuro-surgical cases, and 316 cases falling under various other categories. These include cochlear implants, medial nerve repairs, dental implants, ophthalmic procedures, orthopaedics, facial paresis, and cleft palate surgeries.
Conditions For Surgery
SACIM provides surgery assistance to children of the Republic of Mauritius which includes Rodrigues and Agaléga, whose parents meet the established criteria. Children must be under the age of 18 years old and both parents’ income should not exceed Rs 100,000 per month. SACIM looks after cases which should be operated by specialised surgeons. A referral medical report from the treating doctor is mandatory.
Success Stories
Shubham Kumar
In 2012, Shubham was diagnosed with a Benign tumour in his lower jaw. In 2013, he travelled to India for his first surgery with the assistance of the Ministry of Health and Wellness. His jaw was reconstructed. Subsequently, SACIM took charge of the case. His case was reviewed regularly in Bangalore for further treatment under SACIM sponsorship. In 2019, he underwent insertions of studs over the lower jaw for dentures, followed by implants supported by fixed dental prosthesis which was successfully completed. He is doing well now. He passed his ACCA exams and is working as an Accountant.
Brandy
Brandy was first seen by SACIM doctors in 2010 with deformities of both knees and feet since birth. She was then a young girl of 13 years’ old who could not stand up and walk and had to crawl about. In August 2011, SACIM arranged for her to be admitted at the SPARSH Hospital in Bangalore where she underwent several corrective orthopaedic surgeries successfully. Since then she is able to walk with bilateral callipers and special shoes.
She can now participate in several sport activities. As such, she took part in several Paralympic competitions in different countries. She has won several awards and her latest achievement is a gold medal at the 2023 Indian Ocean Island Games.
Jean Noah Ryan
Ryan was assessed with a severe vertebral deformity (scoliosis). Since 2022, he has been taken care of by SACIM and he underwent two operations at Wellkin Hospital. In April 2023, he was sent urgently to Bangalore due two broken rods and was operated upon successfully. He is doing well and has resumed his normal activities.
